A TIKTOK user is under investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly posting two items of false and highly offensive content involving Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim.

In a statement, the commission said the posts are believed to have been made in reaction to a domestic controversy surrounding an alleged immoral event, as well as the Prime Minister’s official announcement regarding appreciation incentives for the public.

“In another post, the individual is also suspected of making false and highly offensive claims regarding the Prime Minister’s official overseas visit,” the MCMC added.

The individual was called in for questioning at MCMC Headquarters in Cyberjaya on Monday, 21 July 2025. A mobile phone and a SIM card were confiscated to assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.

“MCMC stresses that it will not compromise on any misuse of social media platforms for the dissemination of excessively offensive or baseless content, and will continue to take firm action to safeguard public order and national harmony,” the commission said. - July 22, 2025
