A HUSBAND and wife were charged in the Kuala Krai Magistrate's Court today with two counts of possessing and distributing 67.7 kilograms (kg) of cannabis in Padang Sembilan, on July 11.
The accused, Wan Muhamad Aziem Ashraf Wan Mustafa, 31, and his wife, Wan Matraf Azlinda Wan Mat, 49, nodded in understanding but no admission was recorded when the charges were read out before Magistrate Amal Razim Alias.
According to the first charge, which was read out together, the accused were found to be distributing cannabis with an estimated weight of 67.7kg.
The act was committed on the side of Padang Sembilan at 4am on July 11, reported Harian Metro.
The accused was charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and if not sentenced to death, must be whipped with no less than 12 strokes.
For the second charge, both accused were charged with possession of methamphetamine weighing an estimated 15.1 grams on the same day and location.
The accused were charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 punishable under Section 39A(I) of the same Act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment of up to five years and whipping.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mazlinda Mohd Nor and both accused were not represented.
The court did not offer any bail as the case was within the jurisdiction of the High Court and set September 23 for mention of the case and for the chemical report.
It was earlier reported that the couple suspected of being the leaders of a drug trafficking group were arrested with compressed ganja and ganja flowers worth RM2.37 million in raids in Kuala Krai and Pasir Puteh.
Both suspects were arrested at 4am on Jalan Padang Sembilan, Kuala Krai before the next seizure was carried out at the suspect's residence in Selising, Pasir Puteh, at 4pm.
