ALOR STAR – PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that there is no crisis in the party’s Sarawak chapter after its chairman, Larry Sng, announced he would be stepping down from the position.
Anwar, who is also opposition leader, however, said the matter would be discussed in greater detail later today or tomorrow.
“There’s no crisis. He (Sng) merely suggested that, since the majority of Sarawakians are Dayaks, then perhaps a Dayak should lead the state chapter,” Anwar said after a meeting with Kedah PKR leaders here today.
He added that any decision pertaining to Sarawak PKR's leadership would be left to the state to decide on.
“Let them discuss. If they decide on a Dayak leader, then Dayak it is. But in their most recent meeting, he (Sng) was asked to stay on (as chairman), at least temporarily,” Anwar said.
Anwar was commenting on Sng’s announcement on Monday in which he said he would resign as the party’s state chief, just over seven months after taking over the post.
Sng had said that he wanted to let a Dayak leader take over the post and lead the party in the state election, which is due in June next year, and that he would discuss matters on his replacement with Anwar.
The Sarawak PKR leadership council, however, had unanimously rejected his resignation after an emergency meeting was called yesterday and gave its full backing to the Julau MP to carry on until the next party polls.
On Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal’s call for a change in leadership in the opposition, Anwar said this was a non-issue, as no other Pakatan Harapan leader has raised such a proposal.
“Having said that, I have told (PH) members that we can discuss this in our coming meeting,” he said.
Anwar also expressed hope that the opposition can topple Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin before the next general election.
