THE Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has reiterated its commitment to uphold the public's constitutional right to peaceful assembly, while ensuring the safety and harmony of all citizens during a planned gathering at Dataran Merdeka this Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the force remains dedicated to acting as a facilitator to ensure the assembly proceeds smoothly, safely, and in an orderly manner.
“In that spirit, PDRM is committed to playing the role of facilitator to ensure that this assembly is conducted smoothly, safely, and with respect for shared public spaces,” he said in a statement today.
He called on all parties to cooperate and help maintain a peaceful atmosphere throughout the event.
Participants, he said, are advised to remain mindful of existing legal provisions and to help preserve peace and safety in the surrounding areas.
“It is our hope that every voice expressed during the assembly will be delivered in a manner that upholds mutual respect and reflects the civility and values of Malaysian society,” he said.
Mohd Khalid also advised members of the public not involved in the assembly to plan their travel in advance and monitor traffic updates, as slight disruptions to traffic flow are anticipated.
“In carrying out our duty to safeguard national security, PDRM assures the public that safety will be upheld, while the people’s freedoms will continue to be respected.
“We believe a balance between democratic rights and the rule of law can be achieved through strong cooperation and shared responsibility,” he added.
The Inspector-General also expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the police by the public, urging all parties to act responsibly and with maturity.
“Let us all work together to ensure that this democratic space is used constructively, for the sake of societal harmony and overall well-being,” he said.
On 18 July, Acting Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad confirmed that a formal notification of the assembly had been submitted by organisers at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters.
