THE Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is expected to retrofit existing Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks with enhanced safety and logistical features in the wake of a tragic crash that killed nine FRU officers in May.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said a preliminary review by the Department of Internal Security and Public Order (JKDNKA) has proposed several modifications to improve the safety and comfort of personnel transport vehicles used by the FRU.
Among the recommendations are ergonomic seating, seat belts at every seat, improved ventilation, interior lighting systems, and organised storage for operational equipment.
“Installing seat belts at each seat can help minimise the risk of injury or death in the event of a collision,” Saifuddin said in a written parliamentary reply published on the Dewan Rakyat’s official portal.
Additional safety features such as dashboard cameras, beacon lights, and sirens are also under consideration to ensure operational readiness and road safety.
“The inclusion of beacon lights and sirens during FRU convoys will serve as an early warning for other road users,” he added.
The ministry is also exploring the use of passenger buses for non-operational deployments, particularly for longer journeys, to further reduce accident risks during transit.
On 13 May, a fatal accident involving an FRU truck left eight officers dead at the scene, with a ninth succumbing to injuries later at Teluk Intan Hospital. The officers were en route to Ipoh from Teluk Intan when their vehicle was struck by a lorry carrying stones.
The tragedy sparked public concern over the safety of logistics used by security forces, prompting calls for immediate reforms. Saifuddin confirmed that the ministry is treating the matter with utmost urgency and is committed to implementing necessary improvements. - August 5, 2025
