COMMUNICATIONS regulator questioned three individuals believed to be social media influencers, after a video depicting them handing leftover food to a homeless person went viral and attracted widespread condemnation online
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed that the video is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which relates to the misuse of network facilities. If found guilty, the individuals could face a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
The video was labelled "distasteful and highly offensive" by many netizens, with authorities noting that it "touched on the sensitivities of the country’s multiracial society".
The trio had their statements recorded earlier today at the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters in Johor. Investigators also seized three mobile phones and three SIM cards to aid in the ongoing investigation.
In a statement, the MCMC reaffirmed its commitment to “shaping a digitally literate, ethical and responsible society” through the Safe Internet Campaign (Kempen Internet Selamat – KIS). The initiative encourages respectful content creation and aims to foster awareness of shared values across Malaysia’s digital landscape. - August 5, 2025
