THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a stern reminder to the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, images or videos related to the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, following calls from the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney General’s Chambers.
In a statement on Thursday, the regulator underscored that the dissemination of unauthenticated content not only risks offending the grieving family but may also violate ethical standards and existing laws.
“MCMC takes seriously the appeals by the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney General’s Chambers to halt the spread of unverified details concerning the late Zara Qairina,” the statement read.
The commission reiterated Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil’s call for the public to respect the ongoing investigation and avoid fuelling public confusion with speculation.
“The spread of false information is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588],” MCMC stated, adding that convictions may result in a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
MCMC further emphasised that all individuals, including social media users and content creators, should act responsibly and allow due process to unfold without interference. - August 7, 2025
