THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) commended several initiatives by the Sarawak government aimed at enhancing transparency, particularly the creation of the Sarawak Ombudsman.
Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki pointed out that the Sarawak Ombudsman is currently the only one of its kind in Malaysia, responsible for overseeing adherence to governance and administrative standards within the state.
"I wholeheartedly support the formation of this body for the advantage of both the government and the citizens of Sarawak," he stated.
According to a report in the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), he further mentioned that MACC's work in the state continues to receive backing free from political interference, especially regarding investigations.
"This is why one of the key points highlighted by the Premier of Sarawak is the necessity to pursue investigations against anyone, particularly public servants, who engage in corruption or misuse their power in the state," he said after a courtesy visit to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
Azam disclosed that the most frequently investigated cases in the state involve power abuse, bribery related to projects, and fraudulent claims – issues that often result in financial losses and adversely impact public welfare.
He elaborated that such losses occur when projects are either incomplete, poorly executed, or fail to meet quality standards, ultimately endangering the public and leading to infrastructure loss.
Azam also stated that the level of corruption cases in Sarawak is not concerning as the state leadership has demonstrated strong political will to ensure that responsibilities are effectively fulfilled.
He noted that the commission highly appreciates the Sarawak government’s unwavering support in maintaining integrity and good governance without interference.
"The state government has provided robust support to MACC Sarawak, particularly in our initiatives to enhance integrity and fight corruption in Sarawak," he added. - August 8, 2025
