POLICE in Penang have opened an investigation following the circulation of a video on social media depicting a group of individuals involved in what appears to be a riot in Butterworth yesterday.

Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman, confirmed that a report was lodged at the Butterworth Police Station by a local man involved in the incident.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the altercation began when the complainant attempted to assist a motorcyclist who had been involved in a road accident and was lying on the road.

"Suddenly, the suspect got up and punched the complainant, before inciting several members of the public at the scene to start a fight," Anuar said in a statement.

He added that the suspect claimed to have heard offensive remarks from an unknown bystander while lying on the road, which allegedly provoked the confrontation.

Efforts are currently underway to identify and detain the suspect, with the case being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Anuar urged the public not to speculate or sensationalise the case in ways that could disrupt public order or interfere with the ongoing investigation.

"Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact investigating officer Sergeant Muhammad Adib Ikmal Sukri at 04-576 2222 (extension 2275), or approach the nearest police station," he added. - August 16, 2025
