MALAYSIA’S pivotal role as Chair of ASEAN in brokering peace amid regional conflicts, notably the recent border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, has been internationally acknowledged, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Speaking at the launch of the MADANI Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival at Pondok Tanjung, the Prime Minister emphasised that Malaysia’s reputation for political stability and economic development underpins the trust placed in the country as a mediator.
“Syukur Alhamdulillah, politics here is stable, and people respect our economic progress. When disputes arise, the responsibility for peace-making is entrusted to us. The whole world recognises this, even if a few members of Parliament do not,” he said.
“During the recent Thailand-Cambodia border tensions, Malaysia was appointed to assist. Alhamdulillah, we managed to ensure the peace agreement was signed and enforced.”
Anwar credited the success to a collaborative effort involving government agencies such as the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and diplomatic officials who worked on the ground to implement the ceasefire.
“This recognition is a testament to the MADANI Government’s political stability making Malaysia a trusted strategic partner,” he added.
The event was also attended by Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Perak Chief Minister Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
Separately, the Prime Minister reaffirmed that no individual connected to the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir would evade investigation or legal action.
“The government has informed that the police are conducting investigations. I reiterate, no one will escape scrutiny,” Anwar said, cautioning against manipulation of the case to foster negative perceptions or attacks on individuals.
He further stressed the government’s continued commitment to supporting vulnerable communities such as fishermen and farmers.
“Every Friday before prayers, I visit local stalls to meet the people, check on their welfare, and ensure their needs are met. There is no need to wait for election campaigns to engage with constituents,” he said.
Following the ceremony, the Prime Minister inspected progress on the new Kamunting to Anak Kurau road project under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development’s Rural Roads Programme (JALB).
The RM91 million project, approved in 2016 and managed by the Public Works Department (JKR), involves constructing a 6.6-kilometre stretch to benefit over 5,000 residents. It aims to enhance agriculture, plantation enterprises, accessibility, and stimulate local economic growth.
Currently 70.5 per cent complete, the project is ahead of schedule by 59 days, with full completion expected by 15 August 2026. - August 16, 2025
