A CHINESE national has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment and fined RM2,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here after pleading guilty to injuring an immigration officer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last week.
Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani handed down the sentence to Fang Fuyuan, 31, after she admitted guilt when the charge was read to her in Mandarin by a court interpreter.
According to the charge, Fuyuan intentionally caused injury to immigration officer Nurdiana Atirah Shapinaz Abdul Rahman while the victim was on duty at the Level 4 Departure Hall immigration counter of KLIA Terminal 1, around 8pm on 13 August.
Her lawyers, Tai Ying Fung and Jason Anthony, pleaded for leniency, stating that their client had shown remorse, cooperated fully with investigators, and entered a guilty plea at the first opportunity.
They also urged the court to impose a fine instead of imprisonment, highlighting that Fuyuan had already been held in remand for five days and is the mother of two young children who require her care.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Luvithaa Veerasamy argued for an appropriate sentence in the public interest.
“Although the accused claimed to have acted emotionally, her actions nonetheless injured a public servant. The court must send a clear signal that such conduct is unacceptable in society,” she submitted.
The court subsequently imposed a one-month prison term, starting from the date of arrest on 13 August, along with a RM2,000 fine.
In the event of non-payment, Fuyuan faces an additional two months’ imprisonment. - August 18, 2025
