CYBERCRIME activities have costs the nation RM1.22 billion in losses between January and October 2024, according to Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
Among the most prevalent offences were financial fraud, online scams, identity manipulation and unlawful data intrusions.
"CyberSecurity Malaysia reported over 5,900 incidents in 2023, including 3,705 fraud cases," said Mohd Khalid during his address at the third instalment of the PDRM Special Dialogue Series, organised by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) at the Sime Darby Convention Centre on Tuesday.
“There was a staggering 1,100 per cent increase in reported data breaches compared to the previous year. These figures highlight the real-world impact, economic disruption, and erosion of trust in the digital ecosystem,” he added.
Also in attendance were Director of JSJK Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa and Director of the Internal Security and Public Order Department, Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim.
Mohd Khalid stressed the need for the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to evolve rapidly in response to this digital threat landscape.
“PDRM will implement artificial intelligence (AI) in administration, management and deployment to enhance our capacity to tackle cybercrime,” he said.
“With AI in place, I believe many issues can be addressed more effectively, while also reducing reliance on human resources.”
Commenting further on the dialogue series, Mohd Khalid described it as a vital platform for operational discourse, policy development and strategic cooperation.
“This third session focuses on the complexity and urgency of the growing threat of cybercrime, making it a highly relevant and critical topic in today’s environment,” he said. - August 26, 2025
