THE grave of Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, a 22-year-old cadet from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Reserve Officers Training Unit (PALAPES), was exhumed this morning at the Kampung Rinching Ulu Muslim Cemetery in Semenyih, Selangor, for a second post-mortem.
His mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, confirmed earlier that the exhumation was scheduled to begin at 8.00am on Friday. “The exhumation of Syamsul Haris’s grave is set for 29 August at 8 in the morning,” she said when contacted.
The process began at approximately 8.30am and was expected to take two to three hours. The remains are to be transported to the Forensic and Pathology Unit at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) immediately after for further examination.
By 7.00am, the entrance to the cemetery had already drawn family members and local residents, though public access was strictly barred. Police cordoned off the site as early as the day before, setting up yellow tape and a Mobile Police Station vehicle to ensure full security.
At 7.45am, Ummu Haiman was seen entering the cemetery grounds to witness the exhumation of her son’s grave.
BH reporters at the scene noted that two tents and a blue canvas were erected around the grave site the evening prior. A media tent was also set up across the road from the main entrance to facilitate press coverage.
Authorities involved in overseeing the exhumation include officers from the Royal Malaysia Police Forensics Unit, the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) of Bukit Aman, forensic specialists from HKL, legal representatives, religious officials from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), and Syamsul Haris’s mother.
One cemetery committee member, speaking anonymously, said: “The entire area is under strict police control. The public and cemetery management are not involved in the process, which is being handled entirely by the authorities.”
Shah Alam High Court had on Tuesday granted an order for the grave to be reopened following a formal request from the family. Ummu Haiman had earlier expressed hope that the process could be carried out within 48 hours of the court ruling.
Syamsul Haris died on 28 July at Kota Tinggi Hospital after undergoing a training session at the Inoculation Combat Shooting Range at the Army Combat Training Centre (PULADA) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. He was laid to rest the following day, on 29 July, at the same cemetery now under scrutiny. - August 29, 2025
