THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has confirmed it is investigating a racially charged and false social media post linked to Manjoi assemblyman Mohd Hafez Sabri, in relation to an incident during the recent National Day celebration in Ipoh, Perak.

The post in question alleged that a Chinese woman had taken to the main stage during the state-level event, a claim MCMC has since verified to be untrue. Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department had earlier also confirmed the information to be false, warning that such content has the potential to stir racial tensions and provoke negative public sentiment.

Mohd Hafez was summoned for questioning at Bukit Aman Police Headquarters on Tuesday, 2 September 2025. The investigation is being conducted jointly by MCMC and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 \[Act 588], which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

In a statement released on Wednesday, MCMC stressed that the dissemination of false and racially provocative content is a serious offence that could undermine national harmony and public order.

“The public is reminded to always verify the accuracy of information before creating or sharing any content on social media,” the Commission said on Wednesday. - Sept 3, 2025
