THE Federal Government hopes the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) will bring greater comfort and connectivity to residents of northern Sarawak, where difficult geographical conditions have long hindered development, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Speaking at the launch of SSLR Phase 2 in Nanga Medamit, Anwar acknowledged the unique logistical challenges faced by communities in the region, particularly when it comes to road access.
“The Federal Government understands the mobility difficulties faced by people in northern Sarawak, especially in terms of road accessibility,” he said.
“Earlier, I travelled by helicopter from Miri to Limbang and had to pass through Brunei. I fully appreciate how difficult it is for residents in this area.”
“From above, I could see the steep, hilly terrain. That’s why development costs are higher here and require significant funding,” he added.
The Prime Minister was joined at the launch by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Phase 2 of the SSLR project is expected to be completed by 2029 at an estimated cost of RM7.6 billion. Spanning 335 kilometres, it will connect Mulu, Nanga Medamit in Limbang, Long Luping in Lawas, and Ba’kelalan.
The project includes the construction of roads, bridges, viaducts, street lighting, and drainage systems.
SSLR Phase 2 serves as a continuation of Phase 1, which began in 2021 and stretches from Lawas to Long Luping. Phase 1 has so far reached 57.6 per cent completion. - September 11, 2025
