THE death toll from Monday's landslides and floods in Sabah has risen to 14 after rescuers recovered the body of a 10-year-old girl in Papar late yesterday.

She was the last of three victims killed when a wooden house in Kampung Maragang Tuntul was buried by mud.

Her mother, 34, and six-year-old brother had been found earlier in the day, Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Pisar Aziz said.

The Fire and Rescue Department later clarified its report that a six-year-old boy was still missing.

The worst toll was in Kampung Cenderakasih, Kota Kinabalu, where a landslide killed seven people, including four children aged between two and nine.

In nearby Papar, a 38-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son died when three houses in Kampung Mook were destroyed.

Elsewhere, a 20-year-old man drowned while fishing in Kuala Penyu floodwaters, and a 97-year-old man was killed last week when his home in Kampung Sarapung, Penampang, was buried.

Since Sept 8, nearly 90 incidents have been recorded across Sabah, including landslides, flash floods and road collapses. Twenty-six roads remain closed.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has cancelled Malaysia Day celebrations in Kota Kinabalu to focus on rescue and relief. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim pledged RM10 million in federal aid to support immediate response and recovery.

According to the Civil Defence Force, 2,272 people from 590 households have been displaced in Beaufort, Penampang, Tawau, Membakut, Papar and Putatan, with 19 relief centres in operation. - September 16, 2025
