A SABAH Electricity (SE) staff is feared drowned after being swept away by strong river currents while attempting to cross a flooded bridge in Keningau last night.

The man, in his 30s, had been working with two colleagues at a substation in  Kampung Nuntunan Apin-Apin before the incident.

Two others managed to escape, while the victim was carried downstream after losing grip of a rope.

Keningau Fire and Rescue chief Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said a distress call was received at 9.57pm and a nine-member team was deployed.

The victim had yet to be found as search efforts continue with the support of police and villagers.

SE Sdn Bhd confirmed the incident in a statement, saying rescuers had been mobilised and search operations were ongoing.

“Our priority is the safety and welfare of the staff involved, while providing full support to the family,” it said.
