MALAYSIA has invited Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, to make an official visit following his assumption of office. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended the invitation during a phone call on Thursday, according to a statement on his official Facebook page.
“The visit (by Anutin) would serve to further strengthen the longstanding ties between our two neighbouring nations,” said Anwar.
The leaders also discussed recent developments along the Thailand-Cambodia border. “I stressed the importance of maintaining calm and ensuring that differences do not escalate into unnecessary tension,” Anwar added.
He urged all concerned parties to resolve emerging issues through dialogue under the framework of the Joint Border Committee (JBC).
“Malaysia believes that the spirit of dialogue, diplomacy and mutual understanding remains the best path to ensure regional peace and stability,” he stated.
Anutin Charnvirakul, 58, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, officially assumed office as Thailand’s 32nd Prime Minister on 7 September, following royal assent—a move seen as ushering in a new chapter for the country’s political leadership.
In a separate development, Malaysia and Azerbaijan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations established since 1993, with a focus on cooperation in energy, tourism, the halal industry, construction and mineral sectors.
This was expressed during a meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, on Thursday.
“Malaysia views Azerbaijan as a strategic partner with significant untapped potential, particularly in the fields of energy, tourism, halal industry, and cooperation in construction and minerals,” Anwar stated on Facebook.
“This is a foundation we will continue to strengthen for the benefit of the people of both nations,” he said.
Anwar also lauded Azerbaijan’s role in advancing the regional peace agenda, including its recent involvement in the Washington Framework for Peace, and its leadership within the international stage through the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN).
“These achievements demonstrate that diplomacy is not only a medium for resolving conflict, but also an instrument to uphold justice and humanity,” he noted.
He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to bridging East and West through the principles and art of state diplomacy. “In a world increasingly divided, Malaysia chooses to be a voice and mid-tier power in the geopolitical landscape, working towards a more peaceful and balanced global order,” said Anwar. - September 19, 2025
