THE Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) will finalise its political direction — including whether to remain within Barisan Nasional (BN) or accept an invitation to join Perikatan Nasional (PN) — at its upcoming general assembly scheduled for November.
Speaking in Tapah on Friday, MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M Saravanan confirmed that while invitations had been extended by both Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Pas, the decision does not rest solely with party leadership.
“There have indeed been invitations from Pas and Bersatu, and I thank them,” he said. “But this matter must be decided by the general assembly, not by me or the president. The president and I do not have the authority to make that decision.
“This November, our delegates will voice their opinions. Although we have already received a mandate from several states, the final decision will still be left to the general assembly.”
Saravanan was speaking to reporters following a Merdeka Month outreach programme in Kampung Orang Asli Batu 19½, along Jalan Pahang in Tapah on Friday.
He noted that the invitations reflect Pas’s recognition of MIC as a still-relevant political force, particularly within the Indian Malaysian community.
“The invitation shows Pas’s openness to cooperating with a major Indian-based party in the country,” he said.
When asked about MIC’s current position within BN, Saravanan maintained that the relationship remained intact despite reduced activity. - September 19, 2025
