THE Government will not depend solely on MyKad as the means of verifying eligibility for the upcoming targeted RON95 petrol subsidy, according to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
Speaking on the initiative, the minister explained that a variety of verification and payment mechanisms are being developed to provide a more flexible and inclusive system for the public.
“This subsidy programme will not rely exclusively on the physical MyKad. We are introducing multiple mechanisms to ensure flexibility and accessibility,” said Armizan.
Among the alternatives being considered are digital platforms such as the Setel app for Petronas stations and the Shell App, as well as terminal-based payment systems at fuel stations, including both in-station and off-site options.
The approach, he added, is designed to address practical concerns such as damaged or faulty identification cards, as well as to better accommodate users who prefer digital transactions in line with current technological trends.
“The aim is to make the redemption process more practical and user-friendly, especially for those living in rural areas or those experiencing problems with their MyKad chips,” said Armizan.
While MyKad data will remain integrated into the system to ensure accuracy and prevent misuse, the minister stressed that the multi-channel verification model will allow better real-time monitoring and assessment of the subsidy’s effectiveness.
“This integration allows the government to monitor usage patterns and evaluate the impact of the subsidy in real time,” he said.
However, Armizan acknowledged that successful implementation would require comprehensive engagement with stakeholders, including petrol station operators, app developers, and the general public.
“To ensure clarity and public acceptance, we must conduct broader stakeholder engagement sessions,” he said.
He also urged the government to provide technical support and training to rural communities to prevent them from being excluded from the scheme.
“With a phased rollout and an efficient system, the targeted RON95 subsidy can help reduce the government’s fiscal burden while safeguarding public welfare,” he added. - September 22, 2025
