TWO police officers have been arrested in connection with an alleged extortion case involving a 32-year-old man who later died of a sudden heart attack, police confirmed today.

Acting Baling District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Salimi Md Ali, said the officers, aged 24 and 27, were detained under Section 385 of the Penal Code, which pertains to extortion.

The investigation was launched following a police report lodged by the deceased’s 74-year-old mother at approximately 1.15am on Saturday.

According to her account, her son had returned home around 7pm on Friday and claimed he had been stopped by police while riding his motorcycle. He told her that his mobile phone had been confiscated and that he was instructed to pay RM200 to retrieve it.

However, while preparing to deliver the money with his mother, the man suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness.

“The woman contacted health officers from the Parit Panjang Health Clinic to examine her son, but medical personnel confirmed he had already passed away,” said Ahmad Salimi in a statement.

Police from the Baling District Headquarters were dispatched to the scene at 11.30pm that same night. Initial investigations found no signs of physical injury or foul play on the deceased.

The body was transferred to the Forensic Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem examination.

“Police investigations confirmed the man died from sudden death (SDR),” Ahmad Salimi said.

“The post-mortem report determined that the cause of death was acute myocardial infarction — a sudden heart attack — with no evidence of injuries or criminal elements.”

Following the findings, police formally opened an investigation into the alleged extortion under Section 385 and arrested the two officers involved.

Checks confirmed that neither officer had a prior criminal record. Urine tests also came back negative for drugs.

“The suspects were remanded for two days, beginning yesterday, to assist with the investigation,” said Ahmad Salimi.

He added that a disciplinary investigation paper has also been opened.

“A thorough investigation will be conducted on both officers to ensure justice is served,” he said. -September 23, 2025
