THE Kuantan City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan, MBK) has lodged a police report after fraudsters were found impersonating its officers in an attempt to deceive suppliers into providing office equipment using falsified documents.
In a statement, MBK confirmed that it received complaints from vendors who were contacted through WhatsApp by individuals claiming to represent the council. These imposters allegedly presented fake appointment letters and local orders bearing forged official stamps and signatures of MBK personnel.
“MBK has never authorised any individual or third party to conduct procurement privately via WhatsApp or personal phone numbers,” the council said. “All official dealings are strictly conducted through registered letters, official emails, or the Government eProcurement system.”
The council added that it views the matter seriously, as such fraudulent activities not only damage the reputation of its officers and the organisation but also pose a financial risk to suppliers who may be misled into fulfilling bogus orders.
“We have taken action by filing a police report and submitting all relevant evidence to the authorities for further investigation,” the statement said.
MBK has urged all vendors to verify any instructions or documents received through unofficial channels before proceeding with supply orders.
“Members of the public, particularly suppliers, are advised to remain vigilant and not be easily deceived by individuals posing as MBK officers,” the council said. “In cases of doubt, please contact MBK via our official lines at 09-5121555 / 666 / 617 / 619 for verification.” - September 24, 2025
