THE Government reaffirmed its leadership on regional sustainability today as it hosted the 3rd ASEAN Blue Economy Forum at the Sabah International Convention Centre, bringing together policymakers, experts and industry leaders from across the region

Held under the theme “Invigoration of Blue Economy”, the Forum is part of Malaysia’s broader efforts as ASEAN Chair in 2025 to prioritise marine, coastal and inland freshwater ecosystems as central pillars of inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

The event precedes the 2nd ASEAN Coordinating Task Force on Blue Economy Meeting, which will take place in Kota Kinabalu on 30 September.

Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Taib highlighted Malaysia’s policy commitment under the 13th Malaysia Plan to position the Blue Economy as a national priority.

She said, “Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the Blue Economy is identified as one of the priorities within the agenda to advance economic complexity, supporting the transition towards sustainable and inclusive growth.”

Outlining the Plan’s strategic focus, she noted its emphasis on “strengthening governance and marine spatial planning, fostering industries such as aquaculture, shipping and eco-tourism, as well as preserving biodiversity through marine protected areas and community-based conservation.”

She further underlined the importance of regional collaboration, stating, “Only through closer collaboration can ASEAN unlock the full potential of its seas, coastal and marine ecosystems, as well as inland freshwater resources, to drive inclusive and sustainable growth.”

The Forum drew participation from senior government officials, academics, civil society, and private sector representatives from across ASEAN and beyond. Key discussions included blue financing, investment opportunities, technological innovation, and capacity development, all framed within the context of strengthening ASEAN’s leadership in sustainable marine resource management.

A dedicated exhibition showcased regional initiatives in the Blue Economy space, providing a platform for stakeholders to present innovations in marine conservation, fisheries, eco-tourism and ocean governance.

The Ministry of Economy reiterated Malaysia’s readiness to work closely with ASEAN partners to align national efforts with the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework, turning policy dialogue into actionable strategies that benefit future generations. - September 29, 2025
