THE ambition for local parties to take the lead in governing Sabah has already been achieved with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in charge, stated GRS information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
He remarked that as a coalition of locally-based parties, GRS serves as the optimal platform to guide the state and bring together the populace in the ongoing endeavor to uphold Sabah’s rights and safeguard its interests, reported The Borneo Post.
"The citizens have long desired to witness local parties steering Sabah’s future, and this has now come to fruition under GRS," he expressed during a handover ceremony of ICT equipment to Catholic churches in Mantob.
Joniston, who also holds the position of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) information chief and Kiulu assemblyman, noted that the increasing public sentiment clearly indicates that the people of Sabah wish for their state to be governed by robust and united local parties.
"When PH opted to endorse Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as Chief Minister, it demonstrated their acknowledgment of the desires of Sabahans for local parties to persist in leading the state.
"This stands in contrast to Warisan and PKDM, who supported Umno in assuming control of the state government … That illustrates the distinct difference," he remarked in reference to the unsuccessful attempt, termed ‘Langkah Kinabalu’, to displace the Hajiji-led state government in January 2023.
Joniston further stated that GRS continues to be pertinent as a coalition that prioritizes constructive collaboration and mutual respect among its member parties.
"In politics, differences will invariably arise. What is crucial is how we handle them with respect, patience, and a focus on the welfare of the people," he asserted.
He emphasised that collaboration among Sabah leaders facilitates improved coordination in tackling significant issues such as rural development, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.
During the handover ceremony, Joniston provided laptops and projectors to four Catholic churches.
He mentioned that GRS remains responsive to the needs of all communities, including mission schools, Chinese private schools, and non-Muslim religious organizations. This year alone, RM70 million has been allocated for these initiatives. – October 5, 2025
