FOUR Form Five students suspected of being involved in a rape case at a secondary school in Alor Gajah, here, will still sit for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) examination on November 3.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the decision was made in an effort to ensure that the education of the students involved is not disrupted despite the possibility of them facing legal action by the authorities following the case.
She said that legal action against them has been handed over entirely to the police, while his ministry is focusing on disciplinary aspects, the school ecosystem and emotional and psychosocial support to all parties involved.
“At the same time, we also want the public to understand that this case involves minors and is protected by law in terms of personal information, therefore, parents and the public need to be more aware and careful when discussing cases like this,” she said.
She also informed that the female student is currently receiving treatment at the hospital and is receiving psychosocial support from the medical team.
Fadhlina was met after holding a special meeting with the state Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Exco, Datuk Rahmad Mariman and Melaka Police Chief, Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar at the State Education Department (JPN), Bukit Beruang, today.
Also present were the Director-General of Education, Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad and the state Education Director, Mahfudzah Mohamed Noor.
Meanwhile, Fadhlina said that all teachers and SPM candidates at the school will be given emotional and psychosocial support.
She said that the move is an effort to ensure that all students can give their full attention and prepare well ahead of the exams scheduled to begin on November 3.
“The group of counselors will provide full support to the school staff and students (SPM candidates) because this school is among those showing the best performance in Melaka.
"Full focus will be given to teachers and SPM candidates, that is what we are prioritising at the moment, including in terms of their preparation for the exams so that they are not disturbed by this case," she said.
