THE Ministry of Education (KPM) has announced that from 2027, all primary and secondary schools nationwide will dedicate 60 minutes each week to a new Character Education Programme under the upcoming 2027 School Curriculum.

In a statement issued on Friday, the ministry said the programme would be integrated into the official school timetable to ensure character-building activities are delivered in a structured and purposeful manner.

“At the preschool level, it will be implemented in an integrated manner through daily learning activities,” said the ministry.

The programme will emphasise experiential teaching and learning focused on nurturing values, positive behaviour, manners and ethics in the context of students’ everyday lives.

“It reflects the Ministry’s commitment to developing a generation that is holistically balanced in academic performance, character, and identity,” the statement read.

Describing the initiative as a strategic shift, KPM said the programme aims to foster individuals who are morally grounded, courteous, and responsible citizens.

“It is one of the flagship components of the 2027 curriculum, designed to strengthen moral development and values among students in a comprehensive and structured way.”

On Thursday, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek told Parliament that the *Character Education* subject will be introduced starting next year, beginning with the preschool level as part of broader efforts to enhance the personal development and values of students.

She noted that the new curriculum is currently in the preparation phase and will be gradually implemented across all education levels. - October 17, 2025
