A CONSTRUCTION worker was charged in the Magistrates’ Court here on Thursday with the murder of his wife’s cousin, who was killed in a violent attack that left the victim’s right leg and left arm severed.

The accused, Hamizi Hamzah, 45, was brought before Magistrate Wan Ashrul Afham Mohamad Azmi. No plea was recorded from the accused.

Hamizi is accused of causing the death of 46-year-old Mohd Shuhairi Hasim at Kampung Kok Bedullah at about 11.20pm last Friday.

The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the death penalty or imprisonment for up to 40 years and 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nazuha Ismail prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented. The court fixed 28 January next year for mention.

In a separate case before the same court, Hamizi was also charged with consuming methamphetamine at the Kelantan Narcotics Crime Investigation Department office last Saturday.

The offence, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

The accused pleaded guilty to the drug charge, and the court set the same date for the submission of pathology and chemical reports.

According to police investigations, the victim, a single father and bulldozer driver, died after being repeatedly slashed with a machete on several parts of his body, including the head.

Preliminary findings suggest the attack stemmed from a long-standing dispute over inherited land, as well as anger over an indecently edited video involving the suspect’s child that had been circulated online. - October 30, 2025
