THE Home Ministry will examine a proposal to integrate closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in schools with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) network to enable continuous, real-time security monitoring.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry would conduct a detailed study of the proposal, taking into account hardware, system and networking requirements before it could be implemented.
“The Ministry of Education has been allocated RM8 million for installing CCTV cameras at strategic locations in schools. This is to enhance safety and monitoring measures,” he said while winding up the debate on his ministry’s 2026 Supply Bill at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.
“Some Honourable Members have asked whether these cameras could later be connected to the PDRM system. I welcome the idea, but it involves issues of hardware, systems and networking. I will ask the Home Ministry to study whether this can be implemented so that surveillance can be carried out in real time,” he added.
Saifuddin said police patrols around schools would also be strengthened through the deployment of multi-purpose vehicles, patrol cars and motorcycles. He called on the Parents and Teachers Association (PIBG) to play a more active role in addressing issues affecting school safety.
According to recent statistics, 87 cases of bullying were recorded between August and September this year, while 112 cases of rape were reported between 2022 and 2025. There were also two reported cases of murder at schools during the same period, involving students from Lahad Datu Vocational College and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bandar Utama. - October 30, 2025
