THAI police have arrested a former Kelantan footballer in connection with the fatal shooting of a 33-year-old Malaysian, seizing two firearms believed to have been used in the attack.
Colonel Jetsadawit Inpraphan, Chief of Police for Sungai Golok, confirmed the 31-year-old suspect was detained yesterday afternoon.
“Police have seized two pistols believed to have been used by the suspect in the murder of the 33-year-old Malaysian,” he told the New Straits Times.
The suspect, a dual Thai and Malaysian passport holder from Bereng, Sungai Golok, faces multiple charges including murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and carrying a firearm in public without a permit or lawful reason. He is currently held at the Sungai Golok police station pending remand.
The incident involves the victim, Mohd Fuad Fahmie Ghazali, who reportedly got into an altercation with the suspect before being shot and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Fuad resided in Pasir Mas and Sungai Golok, where his wife of two years lives.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting. “What I can confirm is that I heard he surrendered to Thai police last night. However, we have not yet received an official report from Thai authorities regarding his arrest,” he said.
The suspect previously served as goalkeeper for Kelantan’s youth squad in the 2014 President’s Cup and later joined the senior Kelantan FC team in 2019. He also played for Yala United FC and PT Prachuap FC in Thailand’s football league.
Mohd Yusoff added that Kelantan police will not be directly involved in the investigation, as the offence occurred within Thai jurisdiction. - November 3, 2025
