SUSPENDED police Inspector Sheila, whose full name is Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar, was charged again at the Magistrates’ Court in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday with obstructing a police officer from performing his duties in the city last week.
The 37-year-old pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin.
According to the charge, she is accused of deliberately obstructing Lance Corporal Malvinderjit Singh Teerath Singh, 37, from carrying out crime-prevention patrol duties in front of a restaurant along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Dang Wangi, between 8.15pm and 8.30pm on 4 November.
Wearing a pink blouse and matching skirt, Sheila was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
During proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hench Goh proposed bail be set at RM7,000 with one surety.
However, Sheila’s lawyer, M. Manoharan, objected, arguing that the amount was excessive.
He told the court that Sheila’s father, a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, was present to stand as surety.
“She has to support seven children, so a high bail amount would burden the family. At present, she also has three other cases before the Sessions Courts in Kuala Lumpur and in Selayang, but she has consistently attended all proceedings since 2023,” he said, requesting bail be reduced to RM500.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Magistrate Aina Azahra allowed bail at RM6,600 with one surety and set case mention for 20 January next year.
Earlier, Sheila arrived at the court appearing cheerful, smiling and greeting media personnel with, “Good afternoon, everyone.”
Dressed in a pink blouse and skirt, she asked how reporters were doing and added, “You can ask me any questions later, okay? Nice to meet you all — it’s a good day, Malaysia.”
However, her tone shifted as she approached the court lock-up.
“Did you ask for permission to take my photo? You cannot take pictures without my consent. Which media are you from? Taking photos without permission — shame on you,” she said firmly.
Her lawyer later confirmed that she had been arrested at about 7.50am on Wednesday before being brought to the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters.
