A FORMER bus driver from Singapore lost more than RM736,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam promising lucrative returns, police reported
The victim was contacted via WhatsApp by an unknown individual claiming to be an investment agent offering high profits. He was instructed to open an investment account through a website provided by the scammer.
Between 8 September and 6 November, the elderly man-made payments into five different accounts, totalling RM736,526.
“Initially, the victim saw a purported profit of RM5.7 million in his investment account. However, he was then asked to make further payments to withdraw the funds, which he refused,” said Kluang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh.
The victim realised he had been deceived when no money was released, prompting him to lodge a police report at the Kluang District Police Headquarters.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.
