SUNWAY Square Mall has announced that pets are no longer permitted in its enclosed indoor areas, following an immediate policy update prompted by a directive from the Selangor state government.
The instruction was reiterated by the Chairman of the Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee, Datuk Ng Suee Lim.
The move comes after Lawyers for Animal Rights (LAR) previously stated that no existing law, bylaw, or gazetted guideline explicitly bans pets from shopping malls in Selangor. In response, mall management confirmed that the updated rule is aimed at ensuring a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for all patrons.
“In accordance with this directive, pets are not allowed within the enclosed indoor areas of Sunway Square Mall to maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for all visitors,” the management said in a statement. The restriction applies to all indoor sections of the mall.
However, pets are still permitted to accompany their owners when moving from the parking lot to a designated pet-friendly outdoor area known as Squirrel’s Playground at Sunway South Quay Lake.
The mall extended an apology for any inconvenience and thanked the community for their understanding.
“We appreciate the community’s understanding as we comply with the state government directive while continuing to serve all visitors with care and respect,” the statement added.
LAR, meanwhile, disputed claims by Datuk Ng that a comprehensive ban on pets in Selangor malls “remains in force,” emphasizing that lawful activities cannot be restricted merely through announcements or implicit instructions, citing Federal Court rulings on the limits of executive authority.
Sunway Square Mall had previously attracted attention for being the first shopping centre in Malaysia to officially allow pets indoors, displaying “Pet-Friendly Mall House Rules” that required animals to remain in strollers or carriers, use designated lifts, be constantly supervised, and maintained hygienically at all times.
Pets exhibiting aggressive behaviour or causing disturbances could be asked to leave for safety reasons. - December 18, 2025
