THE courts are set to hear several cases this week that have drawn significant public attention. Among the most anticipated is the High Court’s ruling on Tuesday regarding an application by Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30, to stay a five-year prison sentence imposed for neglecting her son, Zayn Rayyan Abul Matin, which resulted in physical injuries two years ago.
Represented by lawyer Haresh Mahadevan, Ismanira argued that the postponement of her prison term should be considered due to exceptional circumstances surrounding her six-year-old autistic son, who is currently under the care of her husband and requires ongoing emotional support from his mother.
In a separate matter, the Magistrate Court is scheduled to hear the next stage of rapper and director Namewee’s (Wee Meng Chee, 42) drug case tomorrow.
The proceedings were previously postponed after Namewee was unable to attend court due to an Influenza A infection.
At a hearing last Thursday in two separate courts before Magistrates Atiqah Mohamed@Mohamad Saim and S Arunjothy, lawyer Joshua Tay informed the courts that his client was unwell and could not appear. The courts subsequently set the next mentions for tomorrow and 19 January next year.
Namewee faces two charges: possession of suspected ecstasy weighing approximately 5.12 grams at a hotel on Jalan Conlay on 22 October, and the consumption of amphetamine, methamphetamine, 11-nor-delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THC) and ketamine.
Meanwhile, in Sungai Petani, the Magistrate Court has scheduled Thursday for the submission of a probation report concerning two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, who admitted to assaulting a secondary school student last month.
The victim was found unconscious in the school dormitory bathroom on 24 November, having suffered bruising to the abdomen and requiring hospital treatment.
These cases, spanning family law, criminal proceedings, and juvenile justice, are expected to attract significant public and media attention throughout the week. - December 22, 2025
