PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the immediate ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand that took effect at noon on Saturday.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said the decision to stop fighting and maintain troops in their respective positions reflected a mutual recognition of self-restraint, particularly in the interest of civilians.

He said the Joint Statement on the ceasefire outlined practical and positive steps, including verification by the ASEAN Observer Team and direct communication between defence authorities.

"This step provides the basis for stability, and I hope both sides will implement it with full commitment.

"As Malaysia hands over the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines at midnight on 1 January 2026, we will support all efforts to ensure that this commitment is honoured and that ASEAN's credibility and dignity as a peaceful region are maintained," he said.

Cambodia and Thailand agreed to implement an immediate ceasefire effective at noon (local time) on Saturday, thus ending the conflict that escalated again on 7 December.

The defence ministers of both countries signed the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the General Boundary Committee (GBC) on Saturday morning, the third day of the meeting. – December 27, 2025
