PROCUREMENT and tender structures within the Malaysian Armed Forces should be strengthened through greater transparency to prevent conflicts of interest and protect institutional integrity, according to civil society and anti-corruption figures.
Bersih chairman Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said the Malaysian Armed Forces is a critical institution responsible for safeguarding national sovereignty and defence, making sound governance an imperative rather than an option.
“However, it is unfortunate if such a major institution becomes entangled in issues of governance,” he told Sinar Harian.
Echoing these concerns, Rasuah Busters committee member Zairudin Hashim stressed that leadership positions within the armed forces represent a profound trust that must be exercised transparently and grounded in merit.
“Leadership is a major trust that must be carried out transparently, based on qualifications, performance, integrity and credibility,” he said.
He added that such an approach is consistent with the Islamic principle of Al-Qiwamah, which emphasises responsibility and accountability in leadership, and is equally vital to maintaining public confidence.
“I hope the new year becomes a turning point towards credible leadership with a genuine spirit of service, so that the Malaysian Armed Forces continues to be respected as a bulwark of sovereignty and a symbol of security trusted by the people,” he said.
The calls reflect growing public scrutiny over governance standards in state institutions, with advocates warning that any lapse in transparency, particularly in procurement and tender processes, risks weakening confidence in bodies entrusted with national security. - January 2, 2026
