A FORMER Kelantan footballer, identified as the principal suspect in the fatal shooting of a Malaysian man in Sungai Golok last November, is scheduled to face murder charges at the Narathiwat Court this month, Thai authorities have confirmed.

Colonel Thun Sirikhunt, Sungai Golok police chief, stated that the 31-year-old suspect will also confront additional charges, including the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as carrying firearms in public without a permit or valid justification.

“The suspect has been remanded at Narathiwat Prison since November 2. He will be brought before the court once his 84-day remand period concludes,” Colonel Thun told the New Straits Times yesterday.

The police chief added that the suspect was denied bail by the Narathiwat Court due to the gravity of the alleged offences.

The victim, 33-year-old Mohd Fuad Fahmie Ghazali, was shot at his home in Sungai Golok town on November 1, following a disagreement with the suspect over a business-related debt.

Thai authorities arrested the former athlete the following day after he surrendered to the police. Investigators also recovered two pistols from the suspect, who hails from Bereng, Sungai Golok.

The upcoming court proceedings will address both the murder allegation and the related firearms offences, marking a significant step in the cross-border criminal case. - January 3, 2025
