THE streets of Bukit Bintang came alive with dazzling lights and vibrant performances last night as Malaysia officially launched its Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, anchored by the I LITE U initiative, a sustainable urban lighting project aimed at enhancing the capital’s nightscape.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the launch at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, accompanied by Oscar-winning actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, who returned home to support the campaign.
Highlighting the importance of unity in Malaysia’s growth, Anwar said the country’s success in tourism stemmed from the harmony among its diverse communities.
“It has been a success because of all the races we are seeing here – from Perlis to Sabah to Sarawak, every race, we should be proud and we need to defend this,” he said.
“We are proud Malaysians, and when I say Malaysians, I’m referring to the Malay, the Chinese, the Indian, the Sarawakians, the Sabahans – we are a great nation! And don’t forget, we have also produced the first ASEAN Oscar winner, Michelle Yeoh.”
Michelle Yeoh, speaking at the launch, reflected on the symbolism of light in guiding paths and signalling presence.
She described the event as an invitation for the world to experience Malaysia’s diversity, warmth, culinary delights, and vibrant culture.
“VM2026 is not just about tourism; it is an invitation to experience our diversity, warmth, culinary symphony and our vibrant hearts,” she said.
“To my fellow Malaysians, let us show the true meaning of Malaysian hospitality. And to our future guests, from near and far, our arms, our hearts and our shining country are open to welcoming you.”
The I LITE U project, led by the Housing and Local Government Ministry, spans nearly one kilometre around Bukit Bintang and features over 70 energy-efficient LED installations, including chandeliers, moon lights, and fairytale-themed decorations.
The initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety, improve walkability, and support KL’s low-carbon city goals, with plans to expand to other major cities such as Ipoh, George Town, Melaka, and Johor Bahru.
The launch was accompanied by a lively parade showcasing 16 contingents from government agencies, departments, and schools, alongside multicultural performances including lion and dragon dances, bhangra, kompang, and brass bands.
Singer Faizal Tahir performed atop a Hop-On Hop-Off bus, while VM2026 Sun Bear mascots, stilt walkers, and clowns entertained both locals and tourists.
Anwar and Yeoh inaugurated the festival by lighting a luminous sphere, symbolising the campaign’s theme of Infrastructure, Lighting, Innovation, Technology, and sustainable Urbanisation.
The festival also emphasises Malaysia’s cultural heritage, eco-conscious urban development, and the nation’s ambition to attract 28 million visitors and generate RM76 billion in revenue during Visit Malaysia 2026.
With the streets illuminated and celebrations in full swing, the I LITE U launch has set a luminous tone for Malaysia’s tourism ambitions, combining innovation, sustainability, and cultural pride to welcome the world. - January 4, 2025
