EVERY political party has the freedom to decide on its own strategic partnerships according to its respective considerations and goals, PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said, while underscoring her party’s respect for the choices made by others.

She said parties may adopt different approaches in selecting allies, depending on whether they seek ideological alignment or broader outreach.

“Some choose like-minded partners who share the same way of thinking, while others opt for those with differing views, and each has its own reasons and justifications.

“Those who choose partners with different views may aim to complement one another and expand their reach, while those who are like-minded usually seek to strengthen their core voter base, but that is a matter of individual choice,” she said.

Fuziah was speaking to reporters after the Back-to-School Voucher Distribution Programme 2026 here on Sunday.

Her comments came in response to remarks by UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who recently expressed the hope that UMNO and PAS could unite to foster greater Malay unity.

Dr Akmal made the statement during his speech at the UMNO Youth Special Convention held at Dewan Tun Dr Ismail, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday.

He also said that all motions and proposals from the convention would be brought to UMNO’s Supreme Council for consideration.

Among the resolutions raised at the convention was a call for UMNO to swiftly form a united front with PAS, anchored on a shared commitment to safeguarding religion and race.

Meanwhile, Fuziah reaffirmed that the Madani Government would continue to focus on consolidating support for the Unity Government.

Asked whether any developments in political cooperation could pose challenges to the government, she said the matter was open to interpretation.

“That is open to each person’s interpretation,” she said briefly. - January 4, 2025
