POLLICE in Kota Kinabalu police have successfully disrupted a large-scale drug distribution network, seizing more than 40 kilograms of narcotics valued at RM1.31 million and arresting three local men in two separate operations in Penampang.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun revealed that the first case involved the arrest of two men, aged 28 and 29, at a residence in Taman Donggongon on Tuesday.

The operation followed intelligence reports after police observed the suspects acting suspiciously in the living room of the house.

“Upon inspection by officers, 40 large transparent plastic packets were discovered. Further examination revealed that the packets contained crystalline blocks suspected to be methamphetamine, with a total gross weight of 39.5 kilograms, valued at approximately RM1,264,000,” he said at a press conference at the Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters on Thursday.

Jauteh explained that the syndicate employed maritime routes to smuggle drugs into Sabah, often concealing the contraband within everyday items.

“Intelligence indicates that the modus operandi involved using shipping companies and hiding the narcotics in chopping boards,” he noted.

In the second case, police arrested a 39-year-old man outside a hotel lobby on 2 January. “Upon inspection, eight plastic packets of various sizes were found containing powder suspected to be ecstasy, with a total gross weight of 214.97 grams.

Additionally, 40 transparent packets were discovered containing crystalline powder suspected to be ketamine weighing 113.22 grams, with a total seizure value of RM22,000,” he said.

A subsequent raid at an apartment unit in the same district uncovered additional drugs, with an estimated total weight of 283.71 grams valued at RM25,980.

All three suspects are currently remanded to assist investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction. - January 8, 2025
