Abdul Hadi signals he is unlikely to take over as Perikatan Nasional Chairman

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has indicated that he is unlikely to assume the role of Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman following the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, suggesting that the decision should be left to the party’s central leadership.

Abdul Hadi said PAS would convene a central committee meeting next week, during which the appointment of a new PN chairman would be discussed.

“We leave it to PAS Central to choose a candidate, but not necessarily me. We are prepared to support whoever is selected by the top leadership at the central level,” he said after delivering a Dhuha lecture at Masjid Rusila on Sunday.

He did not disclose the exact date of the meeting, particularly with regard to the selection of a replacement for Muhyiddin, the Pagoh Member of Parliament, who stepped down from the post late last month.

When asked about the delay in convening the meeting, Abdul Hadi pointed to the absence of a PN secretary-general following the resignation of Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

“They are too keen to depend on me, but that is fine. I leave it to the central leadership to choose the PN chairman,” he said jokingly.

Commenting on the offer of state executive council positions to PAS assembly members by Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Abu Bakar Hamzah, Abdul Hadi said the party had decided not to allow its elected representatives to accept the appointments.

He stressed that PAS had made its position clear and that the decision not to join the Perlis state administration was taken by the party’s highest leadership.

“PAS considers it a betrayal to bring down the government led by former Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli,” he said. - January 9, 2025
