PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today enlivened an official event with a light-hearted remark about his loyalty to football club Manchester United, while revealing “personal tension” with his grandson, who is an Arsenal supporter.

Speaking at the launch of the 120th anniversary celebration of the National Audit Department, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, began his speech by expressing gratitude for the smooth running of the event before spontaneously linking it to the English Premier League match results early this morning.

“Alhamdulillah, we can carry out this event successfully. I am even happier because yesterday Arsenal scored two, but Manchester United scored three.

“That’s why my grandson is really upset. I also keep track of these developments,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience, reported Bernama.

Also present were Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi.

In the English Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium early this morning, Manchester United edged league leaders Arsenal 3- 2 with a late goal in a dramatic encounter. – January 26, 2026
