THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has successfully dismantled a scam operation involving the use of Fake Base Transceiver Stations (Fake BTS) in Genting Highlands, following a recent integrated enforcement operation.
The operation was carried out after continuous technical monitoring and network analysis by MCMC detected disruptions to communication services as well as the dissemination of scam-related SMS messages to mobile users
Based on this technical intelligence, MCMC planned and executed a joint field operation with a telecommunications company.
On 19 January 2026, MCMC enforcement teams tracked down two vehicles that were being used to operate the Fake BTS transmissions.
On-site inspections confirmed that the telecommunications network had been intercepted and manipulated, believed to be for the purpose of sending fraudulent SMS messages to victims.
The findings indicated that the activity was carried out in a systematic and well-coordinated manner.
All Fake BTS equipment and control devices were seized for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 239(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), as well as Regulation 16(1)(b) of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.
Under Section 239 of Act 588, an individual convicted of the offence may be fined up to RM1 million, imprisoned for up to 10 years, or both. For offences under Regulation 16 of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000, offenders may face a maximum fine of RM300,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
MCMC said it will not compromise on any form of misuse of communication networks that could jeopardise public safety and the integrity of the nation’s telecommunications systems.
The commission added that enforcement efforts will continue to be intensified to ensure Malaysia’s communications networks remain secure and protected. - January 31, 2026
