INDIA’S Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed Malaysia this afternoon, concluding a two-day official visit hosted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
A special aircraft carrying Modi and his delegation departed from the Bunga Raya Complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 4.35 pm.
Malaysia’s Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who accompanied the Indian leader during the visit, was present to bid him farewell.
Modi received full ceremonial honours, including a guard of honour from 28 officers and personnel of the First Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment.
Approximately 100 students, including those from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (T) Dengkil and Sekolah Menengah Sains Banting in Selangor, waved Malaysian and Indian flags in a farewell gesture.
The send-off also featured cultural performances celebrating Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society.
Earlier during the visit, Anwar and Modi witnessed the exchange of 11 Memoranda of Understanding and agreements covering a wide range of sectors at Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya.
At a joint press conference, Anwar emphasised that Malaysia and India will continue to strengthen collaboration following the elevation of their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.
“India is a key partner for Malaysia, with cooperation steadily expanding across trade, investment, education, technology, and tourism,” he said.
He highlighted the historical, civilisational, and cultural ties shared by the two nations, noting that Malaysia is home to around 2.9 million people of Indian descent—the third largest Indian diaspora globally—which continues to underpin people-to-people links.
Economic relations between Malaysia and India have maintained strong momentum, with bilateral trade reaching RM79.49 billion (US$18.59 billion) in 2025.
Malaysia’s exports totalled RM52.3 billion (US$12.24 billion), primarily in palm oil and palm oil-based agricultural products, as well as electrical and electronic goods.
Imports from India amounted to RM27.19 billion (US$6.35 billion), largely comprising agricultural products, petroleum, and chemicals.
Modi’s visit is part of ongoing efforts to reinforce bilateral engagement, combining high-level political dialogue, trade and investment cooperation, and cultural diplomacy to strengthen economic, technological, and people-to-people ties between the two nations. - February 8, 2026
