MALAYSIA has witnessed a sharp rise in online purchase fraud, with 1,381 reported cases in a single month resulting in losses totalling RM14.8 million, according to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID).
CCID Director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa described the statistics as deeply concerning, highlighting that the losses represent a 57 percent increase compared to the same period last year, signalling a rapid escalation in online scam activity.
“Members of the public are reminded to exercise caution before making any online purchases,” Datuk Rusdi said in a statement on Monday.
To assist consumers in verifying online sellers, the police have advised checking the Semak Mule portal via [https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my](https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my) to confirm legitimacy and reduce the risk of falling victim to fraud.
The surge in cases underlines the growing sophistication of online scams in Malaysia and reflects broader concerns over e-commerce security as more Malaysians increasingly shop online.
