DEPUTY Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform, M. Kulasegaran, stressed that the rule of law applies universally, including to the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), following fresh international media reports alleging extensive shareholdings by Tan Sri Azam Baki.
Speaking in Parliament during the winding-up of the Royal Address debate for his ministry, M. Kulasegaran said a thorough investigation must be conducted to verify the claims reported by Bloomberg before any final conclusions are drawn.
“We need to understand that no one is above the law in Malaysia. This includes the Chief Commissioner of MACC,” he stated.
The matter was raised by MPs Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) and Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor), who sought clarification from the government on reports that Tan Sri Azam allegedly holds millions of shares in a financial services company.
Kulasegaran underlined that Malaysia’s legal framework offers no special protections to any individual, including leaders of law enforcement agencies.
“The legal position in Malaysia is clear, and it does not provide immunity to any party, including enforcement agency leadership,” he said.
The Deputy Minister’s remarks reinforce the government’s stance that allegations of potential conflicts of interest or financial impropriety involving senior officials will be examined transparently and in accordance with established law. - February 11, 2026
