THE nation’s public healthcare preparedness in the face of rising non-communicable diseases and the long-term cost of treating thalassaemia patients took centre stage in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, as Members of Parliament pressed ministers for detailed answers during question time.

According to the parliamentary order paper, Chong Zhemin (PH–Kampar) asked the Health Minister to state the level of readiness of government hospitals in addressing the increase in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as the specific allocations earmarked for early prevention efforts.

Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN–Kuala Langat) sought updated figures on the number of thalassaemia patients nationwide and the estimated cost of treating a single patient from childhood to the age of 40.

He also asked whether the government intends to develop gene therapy treatment methods for patients.

In a separate question, Syahredzan Johan (PH–Bangi) asked the Transport Minister whether peak-hour schedules for Rapid Rail services would be adjusted during Ramadan, in view of changes in commuting patterns and the possible introduction of revised peak periods.

Datuk Dr Richard Rapu (GPS–Betong) asked the Women, Family and Community Development Minister to explain how the Malaysia Care Economy framework and its 2026–2030 action plan would address gaps in access, quality and the care workforce for the elderly, children and persons with disabilities.

He also requested details on targets, allocations and specific performance indicators for the period.

Following question time, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform was scheduled to table the Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No. 1) 2026 and Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No. 2) 2026 for first reading.

The Finance Minister was also due to present the Supplementary Supply Bill (2025) 2026 for its first reading, while the Supply Bill based on headcount for 2026 was listed for second reading.

The sitting was set to conclude with a motion by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform concerning the Auditor-General’s Report (LKAN) 1/2026. - February 23, 2026
