GOOGLE’S strategic investment in Malaysia is expected to have an economic impact of US$3.2 billion and create job opportunities for 26,500 individuals when it is operational by 2030, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said this in a post on social media after holding a video conference call with Alphabet and Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat and her team to discuss the progress of the US$2 billion investment announced in May 2024.

"Alhamdulillah, I have been informed that this investment is moving with encouraging progress, even exceeding initial expectations," he said.

The Prime Minister said the investment includes the construction and operation of Google's first data centre and cloud services in Malaysia.

"This strategic investment is a manifestation of continued confidence in the country's digital economic ecosystem. It is in line with Malaysia's aspiration to emerge as a regional hub for secure data flows, cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation," explained Anwar.

According to him, the government remains consistent in facilitating and providing the necessary support platforms to ensure that the announced investments can be implemented quickly and effectively.

"In this spirit, I welcome Google to continue exploring additional investment opportunities in Malaysia in the future," he said. – February 26, 2026
