POLICE in Penang believe they are close to solving a violent assault case in which a man was severely injured after being attacked and slashed at a shopping centre along Jalan Kelawai in George Town last Wednesday.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said four suspects, comprising two men and two women aged between 29 and 40, have been remanded for between four and five days to assist investigations.

“Police are still conducting further investigations into the four suspects who were arrested, including to determine the actual motive. However, we expect their detention will help resolve the case, which is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code,” he said when contacted today.

Azizee added that investigators have not ruled out the possibility that all four suspects know one another.

Earlier reports stated that two 29-year-old businessmen were remanded for five days until March 4, while a 40-year-old woman employed as a company administrator was remanded for four days until March 3.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a business dispute. A separate 38-year-old woman had also previously been remanded in connection with the case.

Last Wednesday, the victim was seriously injured after being attacked and slashed by a man inside the shopping complex. The assailant reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle. - March 1, 2026
