A STRONG earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck the Volcano Islands, Japan region, at 11.55 am today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said in a statement that the earthquake was centred at coordinates 23.0 degrees north and 144.3 degrees east, with a depth of 81 kilometres (km).

The earthquake occurred 1,442 km south of Yokosuka, Japan, reported Bernama.

MetMalaysia confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the earthquake. – March 2, 2026
