POLICE in Penang have opened an investigation into a Facebook post by a preacher concerning a proposed rally at a Hindu temple near the entrance of Bukit Mertajam Hospital, amid warnings over potential threats to public order and interfaith harmony.
The probe was initiated following a police report lodged on 3 March by Jelutong Member of Parliament RSN Rayer against an individual identified as Zamri Vinoth.
Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the case is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“The police advise the public not to disseminate any unverified information of a provocative nature or engage in speculation that could incite ill intent and hostility between races or communities in this country.
“Members of the public are also advised not to participate in or organise any gathering that could cause disorder or disrupt public peace within the local community,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added that the police are closely monitoring developments and will not hesitate to take firm action against any party found to have breached existing laws.
The controversy follows calls by Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong for the immediate cancellation of a gathering reportedly branded as “Ops Terjahan Rumah Anutan Haram”, which was said to be scheduled for Saturday at 3pm near the hospital.
Sim warned that Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious fabric must not be jeopardised by individuals seeking to cast themselves as heroes through the manipulation of racial or religious sentiment.
He said that holding a provocative assembly would not resolve any issue and could instead inflame hostility and undermine national unity.
A poster advertising the planned rally has circulated widely on social media. The purpose of the gathering is believed to be to press authorities to demolish a temple situated opposite the hospital. - March 4, 2026
